Primary 3-6 Transition Trip to Burn O' Vat, June 2010

Plan of activities

Time Activity Notes/Equipment needed
9am Depart from school Coach booked, travel time approximately 30 minutes First aid kit and pupil specific medicines
9.30am Arrive at Burn O'Vat and toilet stop Bus is remaining at site for the duration of visit but pupils are expected to carry all belongings and equipment with them.
9.40-10 Walk into the Vat, allow time for the pupils to experience the area. Look at how sound travels. Discuss with the pupils how they think it was formed Pupils to walk into Vat single file. Adult helper on either side incase of slip or trip.
10-2pm Activity Sessions – 3 activities each hour long. Activities listed below, one parent helper with each group.
12-1pm Lunch Weather permitting at the bridge area. Usual Craigievar rules about being outdoors at social times apply.
2.15pm Return to school To be back at school for 2.30pm as younger pupils need to get bus home at 2.45pm

Activity 1 (Staff member – Andrea Drummond)

Re-enactment of Thomas the Rhymer:- Pupils will make decisions on the main parts and characters of the story, suitable parts of the area to represent scenes. The re-enactment of the story will be filmed directed by pupils.

Activity 2 (Staff member – Kate Dennison)

Setting the scene (small world) – Pupils will draw a representation of a main character, choose a suitable part of the area to place their character. The should be able to state which part of the story this represent. Still photographs will be taken by the pupils.

Activity 3 (Staff member – Kate Dennison)

Representing scenes with natural materials:- Pupils will, in groups, create the scene of the story using natural materials. They should be able to describe what they have shown and how it relates to the story.
