Introduction to Special Places
- Pupils choose a special place at home
- Activity - draw and write
- List what it is that makes a place special
- Activity - add list to Special Places display area
- In twos pupils choose special places in school
- Activity - digital photography and www.wordle.com
- Mrs Wood takes children on a welly walk to her special place in the village - The Fairy Gate
- Activity - visit Fairy Gate and discuss how it came to be there. Mrs Wood gives reasons as to why it is special to her.
- Photograph other special places in the village on the way
- Visit Crawford Church, now a home
- Activity - list special features of Christian churches. Explore the importance of The Church in Christianity
- Look at sacred places of Judaism and Sikhism
- Activity - to describe the sacred places of the two faiths including religious artefacts within the places and how the buildings relate to their beliefs and worship styles
Session 2010/2011
Term 1 August – October
Special Books, Stories and Storytelling
- Look at special books in Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. Investigate the importance of these books in each religion. Compare the formats and traditions associated with them
- Introduce Our Special Book of Cleghorn Glen to new P1s. Discuss importance of surroundings when relaxed and reading or listening
- Plan creation of a Story Chair in school- a place where we can go to read or to listen to a story being read to us
- Visit Cleghorn Glen for the second time to research characteristics important for the positioning of chair in school. What aspects of the Glen would we like to recreate in our own school grounds
- Choose site in school grounds for the Story Chair
- Ongoing work to create the special place for the Story Chair

- Our favourite stories
- Pupils build up a bank of their favourite stories
- Stories from Christianity
- Stories from Other World Religions
- Story Chair is positioned
- Chair is unveiled at a Storytelling Festival
- Story Chair will be used by class teachers, pupils and adult helpers as a special place to read and listen
